(different types of train services)

Limited express service.
This is a fast, inter-city service, often using specially designed and named trains and providing additional on-board services such as catering, 寝台車 (しんだいしゃ; sleeper carriage) and グリーン車 (グリーンしゃ; first-class carriage). To use this service, the passenger is usually required to purchase a 特急券 (とっきゅうけん; express ticket) in addition to a normal fare ticket for the journey. 新幹線 (しんかんせん; bullet train) is a type of 特急.

Express service.
Slower than 特急 but faster than local service.

Semi-express service.

Rapid service.
準急 and 快速 are both local service with limited stops. Some lines have one or the other; others have both. Where both 準急 and 快速 services are run, it is often confusing even to Japanese users which is faster.

Local service calling at every stop.
Strictly speaking the term 普通列車 includes all services that do not require 特急券 but is often used as a synonym of 各駅停車 (or 各停 for short).
鈍行 is an unofficial term for 普通列車 commonly used as an antonym of 急行.
