デザイン, せっけい【設計】

1. デザイン: aesthetic design, styling design
2. 設計 functional design, structural design, engineering design

□ Although both デザイン and 設計 can be translated as "design," as shown by the definitions and examples below there is a clear distinction between the words.

1. デザイン: aesthetic design, styling design

■ This word is used where the subject of a design mainly concerns the appearance of the item. The word 意匠(いしょう) is also used in this sense, but デザイン is more common. It is considered a form of art, and a person who undertakes this type of design work, usually called デザイナー, normally has artistic training. The discipline of art that deals specifically with the artistic design of industrial products is called "industrial design" in English and 産業(さんぎょう)デザイン in Japanese.

2. 設計 functional design, structural design, engineering design

■ 設計 is the design of an item from the viewpoint of structure and function and is a job of an engineer, often called 設計者(しゃ), 設計技術者(ぎじゅつしゃ) or 技術設計者.
