けいゆ【軽油】

In general contexts, 軽油 means the fuel used in trucks, buses, and other diesel vehicles. In such cases, it is called "diesel oil," "diesel fuel," or just "diesel" in English. When the word 軽油 appears on a sign in front of a gas station in Japan, it indicates that diesel fuel is sold at that station. The 硫黄分(いおうぶん), or sulfur content, of 軽油 is an important issue because high sulfur contents result in increased emissions of particulate matter from diesel engines.

軽油 can also refer to other refined petroleum products with similar distillation properties, such as certain types of heating oils. The English names for those oils will depend on their application.

In the petroleum refining process, 軽油 refers to one of the fractions of distilled petroleum. This fraction, which typically has a boiling point range between about 240 and 350 degrees C, is called "gas oil" in English. The lighter portion of the 軽油 fraction, called 軽質(けいしつ)軽油 or "light gas oil," is refined and treated to produce diesel oil.

Finally, 軽油 can also mean a light fraction of distilled coal tar, typically with a boiling point range between 80 and 170 degrees C. In this case, it is called "light oil" in English. This type of 軽油 is used to make benzene, toluene, and other volatile hydrocarbon products.
