■ the period of extended rain, cloudiness, and high humidity that affects most of Japan during June and early July. つゆ typically begins around June 10 and lasts until early July, though there is much variation depending on the year and the location. While the precipitation is sometimes heavy, the rain during this rainy season is more typically a light, persistent drizzle. Hokkaido is usually not affected by つゆ, although parts of China and the Korean peninsula are. In addition to the season, the word つゆ can also refer to the rain itself.
梅雨 is also read ばいう.
